Description:
Eriobotrya japonica is a large evergreen shrub, or small tree, with large, lanceolate dark green glossy leaves. Leaves are deeply veined, and are produced in whorls, giving the appearance of a big green flower. White flowers are unusual in that they are produced in autumn and winter, and then followed by light orange coloured fruit-loquats- about 4cm in lengt, and oval shaped. The taste is described as a mix of mango, apricot, and citrus fruits. However, the British climate is too mild, and it is rare for fruits to ripen. A handsome small tree for a focal specimen, will suit sheltered city gardens, given full sunshine if possible.
