Daffodil types

Narcissus is the genus name for daffodils. The American Daffodil Society (ADS) divided this genus into 13 divisions The Narcissus are categories by the form of the flower such as the stem, the petals (perianth) and the petal structure (corona).

Golden Harvest Daffodil

 

Division 1 – Trumpet Daffodils
There is one flower per stem. The corona (trumpet) is the same length or even longer than the petals (perianth). This is of garden origin. 12inches to 20 inches tall.
Example of varieties – King Alfred, Dutch Master, Mount Hood

 

 

 

Carlton Daffodil

Division 2 – Long/Large-Cupped Daffodils 
There is one flower per stem. The corona length is more than 1/3 but less than the length of the petal. This is of garden origin.14 inches to 20 inches tall.
Example of varieties – Fortissimo, Ice Follies, Carlton

 

 

 

 

Amor Daffodil

Division 3 – Small-Cupped Daffodils
There is one flower per stem.The corona length is less than 1/3 of the petal. 14 inches to 20 inches tall.

Cheerfulness Daffodil

Division 4 – Double Daffodils
There may be one or more flowers per stem. More than one layer of the petal and/ or more than one layer of the corona. 14 inches to 20 inches tall.
Example of varieties – Petit Four, Cheerfulness, Tahiti

 

 

 

 

Ice wings daffodil

Divsion 5 – Triandrus Daffodils
There are two or more flowers per stem. Flower hang downwards and perianth segments are reflexed. Has characteristics of Narcissus triandrus. 12 inches to 16 inches tall.
Example of varieties – Thalia, Hawera, Ice Wings

 

 

 

Jetfire Daffodil

Division 6 – Cyclamineus Daffodils
There is one flower per stem. Perianth segments are reflexed. Has characteristics of Narcissus cyclamineus. 8 inches to 14 inches tall.

Pipit Daffodil

Division 7 – Jonquilla Daffodils
There may be one of more small fragrant flowers per stem. Corona length varies and perianth segments are flat. Has characteristics of Narcissus jonquilla. 12 inches to 16 inches tall.

Geranium Daffodil

Division 8 – Tazetta Daffodils
There may be one or twenty fragrance flowers per stem depending on the cultivar. Corona length are small and perianth segments are flat. Has characteristics of Narcissus tazetta and or combination of Narcissus poeticus.12 inches to 18 inches tall.

Actaea Daffodil

Division 9 – Peoticus Daffodils
There is one fragrance flower per stem but very occasionally two per stem. Flowers are medium size with a green or yellow centre. White flat perianth segments and corona is small, flat, wrinkled and usually with red rim. Has characteristics of Narcissus peoticus. 12 inches to 17 inches tall.

Hoop Petticoat Daffodil

Division 10 – Bulbocodium Daffodils
There is one flower per stem. The flower, perianth segments are small and the corona is large in proportion. Has characteristics of Narcissus bulbocodium.

Palmares Daffodil

Division 11 – Split-Corona/Split-Cup, Butterfly Daffodils
There is often one flower per stem but depending on the cultivar there may be multiple of flowers per stem. The corona is split from the outer rim inward for more than half its lenght. This division is divided into two subdivisions: a. Collar Daffodils – the corona lies opposite the perianth segments and are usually in two whorls of three. b. Papillon Daffodils The corona alternates to the perianth segments and are usually in a single whorl of six.

Tete-a-Tete Daffodil

Division 12 – Miscellaneous Daffodils
Any daffodils that does not fit into any of the divisions above.

Daffodils that occur naturally in the wild
