Acer palmatum 'Sango Kaku' is an attractive small tree with an extended colour season, with a fantastic colour palette. Its leaves are lime-green in spring, sometimes edged in red, becoming dark green in summer, then turning orange and red in the autumn. Its fantastic red bark even provides colour and interest in the winter.
Japanese maple will grow well in moist but well-drained soil, preferring neutral or acidic conditions. They are hardy trees, but do need a sheltered spot to maintain the appeal of their leaves.
